Ed Ward
Ed Ward was born in 1948 in Port Chester, New York. His first writing appeared in Broadside, a folk music magazine published in New York, in 1965. In 1967, he joined the staff of Paul Williams' legendary Crawdaddy! magazine, and that February was flown to San Francisco to report on the music scene there. Returning to college a month later, he hosted a folk music radio show and wrote for the college newspaper. In 1968, he submitted a piece to Rolling Stone, resulting in steady freelance work from them and, in March, 1970, he joined the staff of the magazine in San Francisco. With the rest of the editors, he was let go that October and began a freelance career that has lasted to this day, serving as the "West Coast Editor" of Creem magazine (actually a nonexistent title), and writing for numerous music magazines.
In 1979, he joined the staff of the Austin American-Statesman, the city's daily paper, as music writer, and interviewed hundreds of performers while chronicling the latest surge in the city's music scene. In 1983, he took a few months off to write Michael Bloomfield: The Rise and Fall of an American Guitar Hero, which was published by Cherry Lane Books. It was only in print for a few weeks due to the publisher going out of business, and the book attained a legendary status for its treatment not only of its subject, but Bloomfield's discussions of working with Bob Dylan. it was finally reissued, in an expanded edition, in 2016.
He left the newspaper to write the first third of Rock of Ages: the Rolling Stone History of Rock & Roll, which came out in 1987, and led to his joining a new program on National Public Radio, Fresh Air with Terry Gross, as "rock and roll historian," staying with the show until early 2017, by which time his pieces were heard by 14 million people each time they aired. Involved with the Austin scene even after leaving the paper, he wrote for the Austin Chronicle, the weekly alternative paper, as well as many other outlets, and worked with the city of Austin to promote its music via the Chamber of Commerce, which led to the formation of the South By Southwest Music and Media conference, today the biggest event of its kind.
In 1993, he moved to Berlin, where he held down jobs as a writer for the Wall Street Journal, a disc jockey on Jazz Radio Berlin, and freelanced for publications like the New York Times, International Herald Tribune, Süddeutcher Zeitung, and Berliner Morgenpost, as well as editing an English-language city magazine called Metropolis and working for Berlin Independence Days, a SXSW-like event in Berlin.
In 2008, he moved to Montpellier, France, but jobs proved scarce. Having gained an agent, he decided to move back to the U.S. to finish the book proposal for what eventually became his latest book, The History of Rock and Roll, Volume 1, published at the end of 2016 by Flatiron Books. A second, and final, volume is being written now for publication in late 2019. This is his first visit to Finland.
