Spring 2020: New works at Music Finland CORE

Music Finland’s Composers & Repertoire (CORE) website is a constantly growing database of Finnish contemporary classical music. The site has profile pages for over 400 composers. Most of the profile pages include a list of works with a possibility to buy scores and parts, both as printed publications and digitally as PDF files.

Here are a few picks of the most recent works at our digital sheet music library. All scores are available for browsing and buying at the CORE web shop. For orchestral parts, please contact our sheet music library staff at musiclibrary@musicfinland.fi.

Sebastian Hilli: Bird (2019) for large ensemble

In 2018 Sebastian Hilli won the Gaudeamus Award at Gaudeamus Muzikeweek. Bird, commissioned by the festival, was premiered next year there by Asko|Schönberg ensemble. “It is a cheerful amalgam of loud staccato blasts from the ensemble, intersected with sudden silences. Hilli creates a lively question-and-answer game that bounces from jazzy percussion and big-band brass to cheery marching band sounds and exhilarating poppy dance music. … A wonderful piece that sends you home with a cheerful feeling”, writes Thea Derks in her review of the concert.

Asta Hyvärinen: Peloton (2019) for ensemble, bicycle soloist (live or virtual) and electronics

Asta Hyvärinen has described her music as surrealistic-cubistic. Peloton was premiered by Finland’s best-known electro-acoustic group defunensemble in November 2019. Even though you don't often see a bicycle amongst the concert instruments, Peloton had one on the stage – and the composer herself as soloist playing the bicycle.
