Kalevi Aho's music wins international awards
Composer Kalevi Aho's latest album has won the prestigious International Classical Music Award in the contemporary music category. Aho's music has also received recognition in other releases.
The album includes the Moonlight Concerto for viola and percussion and the Alto Flute Concerto, performed by the Mikkeli and Lahti orchestras. The soloists are Hiyoli Togawa, Alexej Gerassimez, and Sharon Bezaly. The awards will be presented on March 18 in Bamberg, Germany.
Kalevi Aho's music has also received recognition in other releases. At the end of last year, an album featuring Aho's string quartets was awarded the Deutscher Schallplattenpreis 2025 prize as one of the best releases of the year. The album features the Stenhammar Quartet performing Aho's first three quartets. The award covers a wide range of musical genres and is one of the most prestigious music awards in Central Europe. Both award-winning recordings were released by BIS Records.
In addition, English clarinetist Julian Bliss's album featuring clarinet concertos by Kalevi Aho and Magnus Lindberg is one of three nominees for the BBC Music Magazine Award in the Instrumental Concertos category. The winner will be selected by public online vote.
