Dalia Stasevska selected to NYT Breakout Stars 2023 list

Conductor Dalia Stasevska has been selected as one of the Breakout Stars of 2023 by the New York Times. She is among the magazine's eight choices, which also include Ice Spice, Teyana Taylor and more.

The New York Times has named Finnish conductor Dalia Stasevska as the Breakout Star of classical music in 2023. The NYT named altogether eight performers and artists who "broke away from the pack this year, delighting us and making us think." Stasevska has acted as the principal guest conductor of the BBC Symphony Orchestra since 2019, and as the chief conductor of the Lahti Symphony Orchestra since 2020.

Dalia Stasevska’s concert in January 2023 with the New York Philharmonic was praised by the NYT critic Joshua Barone. In April, the BBC Music Magazine awarded her as Personality of the Year. Both, the BBC Music Magazine and the New York Times highlight that Stasevska, whose father is Ukranian, has strongly criticized the Russian’s attack to Ukraine and supported the Ukranians both on and off the podium. “I can’t save Ukraine by playing music, but I can use my mouth and speak out, and I can act,” she says to the NYT.

The other seven Breakout Stars by the NYT were Bella Ramsey (television), Teyana Taylor (movies), Brian Jordan Alvarez (online), Ice Spice (pop music), Jake Roxander (dance), Rose B. Simpson (art), and Maleah Joi Moon (theater).
