Helsinki Chamber Choir tour the US

Helsinki Chamber Choir will premiere acclaimed Juilliard-trained composer Eugene Birman’s and librettist Scott Diel’s State of the Union in Marquette, Michigan, on Thursday, September 29th.

State of the Union is a choral opera for 12 voices in which four characters—the environment, the rich, the middle class, and the poor—meet and interact over seven movements. In the span of 40 minutes, the work considers environmental sustainability, economic inequality, and the general obliviousness of society.

The program will also feature a selection of traditional Finnish classics composed by Jean Sibelius, Einojuhani Rautavaara, Toivo Kuula and Erik Bergman. Following its premier, State of the Union will tour northern Michigan for one week. A final performance will be given in New York City on October 6th at Wall Street’s Trinity Church.
